Action is a very strong international retailer with presence in Germany since 2009. We are very proud of our international expansion and are getting excellent results in 8+ markets. Our existing countries, are growing steadily, adding all together in average + 200 stores per year to our successful discounter concept. Germany has become one of Action’s biggest and most successful countries with currently more than 370 stores open and  7.000 employees. 

To take lead in the challenging task of managing HR country operations while supporting the growth ambitions of the business, we are looking for a Country HR Manager to guide the existing team, bring up to next level the HR strategy and ensure the success of Action from our Dusseldorf country HQ.

Are you an experienced HR Manager with retail background? Can you coordinate and align at executive level on how to structure and implement best HR strategies and policies? Can you lead a group of over 25 direct and indirect reports to achieve their goals and build a strong and trusted team?  If you enjoy getting into details, have a pragmatic attitude, an entrepreneurial approach and an engaging leading style with a can do mentality, this might be the role you have been waiting for. 

What will you be doing in a daily basis as a HR Manager for Germany?

The Country HR Manager Germany is the lead of the local HR department and reports directly to the Country General Manager with a functional line to the HR Director based in our International Head Office (IHQ). The main focus of the role lies on contributing to the Group HR strategy and policies and ensuring that the HR strategy is correctly executed within the country. 

The ideal candidate is interested in the store operations: in contact with the main players at all levels of the organization, you get energy from visiting the stores and regional managers regularly and keep a short line connection with the sales floor. This way you become constantly updated on the business needs, sharing successes and receiving input from the daily challenges throughout the German territory. The country HR Manager leads the HR team which is composed by HR advisors, Recruiters, L&D specialists and HR Service Center employees.

As an HR Manager for the country you join the existing team and make sure you manage all activities as planned in close alignment with the IHQ. As an HR leader you are responsible for a good, effective and efficient execution of all HR related matters within the country, translating Group HR policies and instruments into execution in close cooperation with local management. 

We are looking for someone who is able to drive excellence into the following main areas:

  • HR Strategy and Policies following given guidelines but adjusting them to country specific legislation and market/cultural requirements.
  • HR Operations management: recruitment, learning, systems and tools, administration, etc.
  • People management: Creates a work environment in which employees are continuously stimulated to develop themselves and to improve their performance
This is you:

You are analytically strong, self-confident, with broad and developed communication and people management skills, with a deep understanding of impact of service on business performance. You are a strong facilitator, that fosters team spirit and collaboration across multiple distributed teams. You are well organised, recognizing (business) patterns, committing to agreements within deadlines and according to guidelines, working efficiently and effectively, also when under time pressure. You lead by example and model behaviors that are consistent with the company's values.

You take a tactical approach: with the least possible complexity and with high efficiency, implementing systems, processes and internal/external resources to achieve perfect accuracy. You are operationally focused: you have a high level of pragmatism, don’t mind figuring out issues with the team and helping solving them; you are very organised and able to structure activities and projects. 

You are in possession of an university degree or level in Human Resources Management in combination with at least 8 years of relevant working experience in an international environment, including minimum 4 years of experience in a management position in the retail segment.

  • Extensive knowledge of current trends and practices within HR
  • Comprehensive understanding of HR instruments, ideally SAP SuccessFactors and law and regulations
  • Proven project management skills
  • Native level of German
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal/written)
  • Strong people management skills, pro-active, customer focussed, analytical skills and result driven
